the importance of targeting an audience
The usual age for the target audience of a horror film is 15- 25. The most common reason for this is that young adults and teenagers enjoy thrills. These thrills are more likely to excite a younger audience rather than an older one. Many young audiences are not put off by graphic images also but are actually drawn towards them.
some horror movies try to target a younger audience to maximise the amount of sales that can be made for example 'the women in black' starring Daniel Radcliffe, they manages to get the movies to a 12A broadening the audience by a huge amount. how they did this was by not showing gore scenes, lack of swear words. in a movie lies this the main focus would of been not showing gore and blood to prevent a 15 or even 18.
other movies have done similar things, well knows for this is James bond they tend to work alongside the BBFC to make sure they get that 12A. they do this by hinting at gore, sexual scenes but not showing it for example In spectre they show kissing then skip ahead to the morning after, they show an antagonist being kicked out the helicopter but not him hitting the ground. And of Couse the eye-gouging they use beautiful camera work and angles to hint at the thumbs going into the eye but leaving the audience to see this from behind, this is then followed by the blood on the antagonist's nails.
other methods used to target audience is using the male gaze, this means using an attractive female to be shown in the movie often as the leading role this attracts in males and both females, in more recent times we have also seen this in reverse for the female gaze.
all of these methods are used to target the audience u want to be watching your film and to maximise the sales u make both in the cinema and on there coach at home.
